Women of Freestyle Jam, June 23-24 2001

This was the first year for trying to hold a gurls freestyle event. The jam was planned for 2 days, Flatland on Sat at Rutgers Stadium in New Brunswick NJ, and Park at the Incline Club skatepark in Lakewood NJ.

Sat started out with some rain but cleared by the time we got to the spot. In the first 15mins around 35 people had showed up, but no girls besides myself and Erin Donato. About an hour into it, the first rain storm hit. Most of the people headed to the cars and waited it out. Except for Adam Guild, he kept riding as though nothing was goin on. The storm cleared we waited a bit for it to dry up and started riding again. The 2nd Storm hit not much later and showed no signs of clearing. Most of the people left for home, as the rest of us sat in the cars. Nina and Stacey showed up with some of there friends and joined us in the rain. With no signs of stopping we started sending people to the indoor spot. Due to traffic half of the cars lost the caravan and ended back up with us, soon after all the stop lights on the main road went out, backing up traffic leaving us stuck where we were. Almost 4 hours after this storm had started it stoppped and started to dry. So we took up riding again. The only other girl to show was Olivia from New York and her friend.

The following day had perfect weather, figures since we were in a indoor park. Throughout the day 12 girl riders showed up to ride, and 2 more to hang out. Saori Chii was even there, who came all the way from Japan, just to ride with everyone. Unforunetly she sprang her wrist before leaving Japan and was unable to ride. Lakewood local Stacey Mulligan came to hang out and take photos despite being unable to ride from wrist surgery. Cory Coffey from Cali, had been staying at woodward and came out. She pulled several backflips into the foam pit but said she was saving the real one for the CFB comp the following weekend. Nina Buitrago and her friend Cara Burgess came down from NY. As did Erin Smith, Paryss Sherman, and Olivia Matos, all also from NY. Erin Donato spent most of her time skateboarding on the mini. Another local begginer, Rosie, came out riding for only her 4th time. And Shannon Ebbecke came out from PA to ride.

We had a local band named "DodgeBall" playing most of the nite and everyone seemed to be having fun. Thanx to our sponsors all the girl riders got some goodies for showing up, as did the guys that we handed stuff to. Overall the jam was pretty good and we hope to do it all again next year
