WOF Monthly Challenge

Each month I will post a challange here that everyone is encouraged to try. Each challange will be about learning something new, getting to know new people, getting better at riding, ect. I will try to make challanges that will be completable by all levels and ages of riders.

There is a specal forum in the WOF message board just for this. Each challange has two posts, one for discussion about the challange, and the other for posting your results after trying or completing it. I want to know what you learned, even if you were unable to successfully complete the challange, you hopefully learned something along the way. So come to the forum and tell your story.

April 2006 Challenge

April is learn an old school trick month.

What is an old school trick you ask? And old school trick is any trick that was done back in the 80's and is now no longer done. Alot of people think.. "Oh those tricks were so easy", but in reality, alot of those tricks were really hard.

Back in the 80's everyone rode flat, if you were a ramp rider, it was in addition to being a flatlander. Many of the old school tricks are flatland tricks, but even if your a ramp rider, a flatland trick might be fun to learn.

Below is a list of some tricks. Part of your mission can be to figure out what these tricks are. In a week or so, I'll post some descriptions to help the people out that are stuck. Special thanks to Mark Murphy for helping make this list.

For a bonus point, take a pic when you learn your trick!!

    Ramp Tricks
  • Griz Air
  • Visor Grind
  • Archibald
  • Cherokee
  • Candy Wrapper

March 2006 - "Learn how to work on your bike month"

This may seem silly, but I know many girl riders can't do the most simple repairs on their bikes. So insted of relying on others, I want you to learn bike repair skills, or improve the skills you already have. Plus its about to start warming up outside, so its a pefect time to do some spring maintance. If you don't know where to start, below is a list of suggestions. You can pick a couple off the list to focus on, try to complete them all, or just mix and match. I suggest picking what will most benefit you, and provide a good challenge.

Who can show you how? Thats up to you, it could be your dad, it could be a local rider or a friend. You can even go in your local bike shop and ask them to help you. If you dont know anyone, stop by the skatepark and ask a random rider to help. Maybe you will make a new friend in the process.

    Begginer Suggestions
  • Learn to change a flat tire (this includes taking the tire off the rim on your own).
  • Learn how to move/adjust your handlebars, seatpost height, and seat.
  • Learn to tighten your chain (you will have to do this after changing your flat).
  • Learn how to change your grips.
  • Learn how to check for loose spokes and tighten them
  • Learn how to tighten a loose headset
    Intermediate Suggestions
  • Learn how to install and adjust your brakes.
  • Learn how to install a crankset and change your sprocket.
  • Learn how to install a headset.
  • Learn how to add or remove links from chain.
  • Learn how to change a freewheel (regular hub) or cog and driver (cassette hubs).
    Expert Suggestions
  • Learn how to replace an axle in a wheel.
  • Learn how to replace broken spokes.
  • Learn how to lace a wheel.
  • Learn how to repack a freecoaster.
  • OR.. find a rider that does not know how to do the above repairs and teach them.
